Fontaines D.C. Announce 2021 UK Tour Dates Amidst Chart Battle for No. 1

Following a riotous year for the group, Fontaines D.C. have announced four new dates to their UK tour. The Mercury-nominated band have already sold out shows in Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield, Cardiff and Bristol for their tour in May 2021. This announcement came amidst being top of the UK midweek album charts with their record A Hero’s Death, out on Partisan Records.

The Irish post-punk band are going up against the global pop-star, Taylor Swift, to get to the number one spot. Frontman, Grian Chatten says that he had “a weird sense of being flattered because the idea that a massive corporation is afraid of losing face to a group of lads from Dublin is hilarious to me.”

‘A Hero’s Death’ is an anti-establishment record, much like their debut, ‘Dogrel’. It is ironic that they are now going up against Swift, who is representative of the corporation they are openly critical of. Chatten commented on this in an interview. “I mean it’s nothing to do with Taylor, obviously, you know, she has absolutely nothing to do with it. I actually like Taylor Swift, but it’s just the industry around her, the huge corporation around her.”

Swift’s album ‘Folklore’ went straight to number one, so Fontaines D.C. will want to stop her staying at the top for another week in a battle being described as ‘David vs Goliath’. The group have received huge amounts of pre-orders for their album, putting the band ahead in the race for number one. However, Swift has now brought forward the release of the CD of ‘Folklore’ to put pressure on the Irish band’s surge to the top of the UK album charts.

‘A Hero’s Death’ has received glowing reviews, as MOJO named them “the most electric rock ‘n’ roll band of the 2020s.” Only 18 months, Fontaines D.C. were yet to release their debut album. Now they are going toe-to-toe with one of pop’s biggest names.
